Meet Dr. Wrong 04/22/2010
We don’t need to hide the fact that doctors are people, too, and not one of those doctors are perfect. Not only do doctors make mistakes, but they are also outright wrong when it comes to some issues. Like in the 1950’s, when doctors recommended smoking Camels more than any other cigarette. An investigation by journalists working for the Hearst Corporation reports that 200,000 Americans will die this year from mistakes made by doctors and in hospitals. Medical errors kill more people every year than car accidents and “More people die each month of preventable medical injuries than die in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001,” said Phil Bronstein, editor of the project. Now, we’re not saying that every doctor is wrong on every issue, but it is very important to remember these things- ESPECIALLY when it comes to your children. Did you know that it has been estimated that 229 children die each year from circumcision[1], which is considered a cosmetic surgery? No health organization in the entire world recommends circumcision, but America continues to do it on a daily basis. Why? Because doctors can be wrong. It’s hard to imagine that an educated doctor could be so ill-informed, but K.N.O.W.’s own founder was told by her OB/GYN that “he obviously had not done the amount of research” that she had concerning circumcision. Of course, this would not be an issue (an OB/GYN should only know about female genitals, right?); however, most OB’s are the ones who perform the circumcision! Isn’t is scary that your son’s penis is undergoing surgery by someone who probably doesn’t know much about male genitalia? Much less, has probably never looked into the consequences of circumcision? Let’s face it, doctors don’t have much time on their hands. The report, “Dead By Mistake,” says medical mistakes can occur from illegible handwriting, sleep deprivation of the doctor, poor documentation and communication, among other causes. If doctors are killing people by mistake because they don’t even have enough time to get adequate rest, what makes you think they are going to sit down and properly research something like circumcision? This is where you come in as a parent. Do your part, and research all that you can before agreeing to ANY type of medical procedure. Once it is performed, you can’t go back and correct the mistake. If you’re not sure where to start, here are some great places to begin your research: · National Organization of Circumcision Information Resource Centers · Intact America · Doctors Opposing Circumcision Remember, doctors can be wrong, just like anyone else. They can offer you advice, but it is up to YOU to make the best decision for you and your family. Make sure you don’t make a mistake, too. Sources: [1] Baker RL.
